today, i jumped from an airplane

so amazing!  thank you best friend Andrew Breitenberg for this wonderful birthday gift.

We flew out of the Wonderbook airport and leaped at 11,000 feet.  I will try to get pics from Melissa and Andrew to share with the rest of you…

A

classic Iain

“If I saw the Grim Reaper, I’d be scared to death.”

yes, he said this the other day.  this is just too good to be made up :)

Take a stand AGAINST hate speech in this election!

I’ve signed onto ColorofChange’s open-letter calling out McCain and Palin. ColorOfChange.org will publish it this week, and as they’ve shown in the past, when enough of us stand together, we can force the mainstream media to amplify our message. Will you join us?

excerpt from letter:
In the last few weeks, Senator McCain and Governor Palin, rhetoric at your campaign events has taken an increasingly dangerous tone that seems to ignore the precarious state of our progress when it comes to race and ethnicity. Supporters at your rallies and other events have used hateful language and called for violence against Sen. Obama yelling “kill him!” “off with his head!” and “bomb Obama.”

For the most part, you have stood by in silence. In addition, you have also repeatedly made statements that somehow connect Senator Obama with terrorism. Your surrogates have emphasized his middle name. This is problematic and dangerous, and we believe helps create the conditions that have given rise to these incidents of violent rhetoric from some of your supporters.

Today, we’re standing together as Americans of all political persuasions to express our deep concern that the decisions of your campaign are contributing to a dangerous atmosphere of paranoia, division, and hate that, as we have already seen, has the potential to seriously harm our country and its progress.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In these trying times, candidates seeking the highest offices in the land must call on the best in each of us, and call off the worst.

We urge you to join people of conscience from all races and backgrounds to reject the politics of division and fear, and come together to uplift the country and create a more equal and just society.

Imagining book

Our second-to-last NieuCommunities posture is IMAGINING.  At that stage of the year, we are learning how to partner with God in imagining what can be – both for ourselves and the Church.  As with our other postures, we read to compliment/inform our other training.  In the past, we have used books that have to do with what the Church can be.  For next year, we are looking for a book that is more about what it means to imagine.  HOW do we sit with God and dream?  How do we discern and put into action that which is on God’s heart?

I would really like your suggestion on a book that helps with that!

on vision

tonight, our apprentices shared their vision statements.  These come from an intensive process called life compass that is intended to help people discern God’s calling on their life.  It is also the culmination of some of the learning they have experienced in their year with us.  I have to tell you, these were amazing.  I was so proud to see how well our people are reaching into their hearts and seeing what God has put in there!

My vision statement is something I come back to often.  That’s sort of how I work anyway – keeping it in front of me to motivate and make sure I am being/doing the things I believe in.  And while my vision statement is pretty good and accurate, I am beginning to see it as somewhat limiting and small.  In fact, God is stirring something significant inside me.  Not sure how it will work itself out, but I believe it will be big.  I don’t expect it to be fundamentally different from what I know about myself.  Instead, I think there is a new, connected thing that is emerging.  Interestingly, my friend Andrew has been a significant catalyst in the process and I think will play a major role in how it gets fleshed out in the near future.

So for now, I ask you to pray for me, particularly as I continue to discern what God is saying.  And if you have any thoughts or words, would welcome those as well.

i have no idea where i am, but i’m glad i got here.

spoken by Arthur Paul this evening.  In his case, it was in reference to his current location in a video game.  But, classic and insightful nonetheless.

Do you ever feel like that?  I do.  This is my life.  So many twists and turns.  Many good and memorable people and things.  But how did I get here – where am I?  Sort of like when you are driving and suddenly realize that you haven’t really been paying attention.  You’re in the right place, just not sure how you did it.

Part of it has to do with perspective.  We’re the fish in the tank.  Of course we don’t see ourselves from all the angles.  Our finite limitations keep us in the moment, narrow, and often self-absorbed.  And we probably couldn’t handle seeing much more than we do – too many factors to take in.

It is so good though, isn’t it?  I don’t know where i am, but I’m glad I got here.  I hope you are glad for where you are right now.
